Reflection on Paraphrase Practice
I have learned the very important difference between paraphrasing and summarizing, and how to avoid plagiarizing. That paraphrasing is much more strict to the original passage you are going off of, and that you need to broaden your vocabulary to fully understand what the original passage is saying so you can put it into your own words. Summarizing, on the other hand, is way more brief and sticking to the main point, it is not completely limited to the original passage. You would use paraphrasing when you need to retell a quote or any textual evidence to show how it contributes to your main point in like an essay or assignment. Summarizing is used when you need to describe the main point in a brief way to lead up to any opinion you plan to make, like to summarize a plot.
This is what I learned today: by Mrs. Lawson
" -Only use a direct quote when it adds power and style to my writing.
-Always make it clear, from context, that I understand the full meaning of the quote
-Whether I quote or paraphrase, I must always be transparent adult the sources and how I'm using it.
-If I use another author's exact words or phrases, to any extent, I have to use quotation marks and give credit.
-If I use another author's presentation of facts or ideas, but put their own ideas in my own word, (paraphrase) I better have a good reason for doing so, and I MUST give credit.
-Hyperlinking is so easy, there is no excuse for not being transparent about my sources. "
