Gun Control

The Federal assault weapon ban is a controversial and very complicated issue that has surfaced in the US in the late 1990s and now. This law basically prohibits any manufacturer to sell to civilians certain semiautomatic weapons (assault weapons). The purpose was to not get rid of the gun violence problem entirely, but to reduce the use and frequency of mass shootings. It was a ten year ban passed in 1994 by President Bill Clinton. It was then "expired" in 2004 with a "sunset provison" which is a law that is destined to cease on a given date, it also violated the constitution. Which I think was such a lazy solution to the problem, it is just prolonging the inevitable. It violated the constitution as it claimed a person/group fro a crime without trial, it was "unconstitutionally vague", and challenged the 9th amendment as taking away rights. This ban decreased the mass shooting incidents, but still wasn't a viable fix because it had loopholes, hence the complicity of this issue, and it only lasted ten years. Semiautomic weapons basically are weapons that are more easy and accessible to shoot in rapid speed, making it easier to mass shoot I am assuming, it is any weapon as a "large capacity ammunition feeding device" or large capacity magazines. The loopholes were the common use of these guns for sporting use, and that there are so many types and even subtypes of guns manufactured that a person could technically not be violating the law with, as such, a gun with a different type plastic grip. There are thousands of guns that creates such a gray are through the political field discussing gun rights. My questions proceeding this are "What say do manufactures say in the matter?" and "If the different type and material of guns is a major problem, then why not ban the materials for the use of these guns to the manufactures?"

  1. Below is a quote from the wikipedia article you used. In your summary it looks like you misunderstood what the article said - which was that the law was not unconstitutional. Let's be sure to discuss it in class so you can better understand what the article meant:

A February 2013 Congressional Research Service (CRS) report to Congress said that the "Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 was unsuccessfully challenged as violating several constitutional provisions". The report said that challenges to three constitutional provisions were easily dismissed.[23]:7 The ban did not make up an impermissible Bill of Attainder.[24]:31 It was not unconstitutionally vague.[25] And it was ruled not incompatible with the Ninth Amendment by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.[26]
